🎦 3D camera systems: when should you move beyond line scanners?

There are measurement tasks where a 3D point cloud built from a 2D profile no longer provides sufficient information. In such cases, it is worth considering 3D camera systems.

What do they do differently?
– They operate from multiple viewpoints simultaneously
– Or they use different illumination configurations
– Thus, they generate a 3D image directly

What are their advantages?
– Fast inspection of complex shapes
– Less mechanical complexity
– Shorter cycle times for certain applications

And the trade-offs?
– Higher system cost
– Blind spots may still occur
– Depth resolution is not always better than with line scanners
